ROCKERS WE LOST IN 2012
The legendary and incredibly influential Montrose founder Ronnie Montrose passed away on March 3 at the age of 64. The heavy metal innovator had numerous battles prostate cancer during his final years, which eventually took Montrose’s life after five years of fighting the disease.
Ronnie Montrose lent his skills to the 1971 Van Morrison album ‘Tupelo Honey’ and was a member of the Edgar Winter Group before the inception of the band Montrose, which Ronnie formed with Sammy Hagar in the early ’70s.
Soon after his passing, a heartfelt statement was posted on Ronnie Montrose’s personal website. “He passed today. He’d battled cancer, and staved off old age for long enough. And true to form, he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life. We miss him already, but we’re glad to have shared with him while we could.”
Dee Cernile was the guitarist for Canadian hard rock band Sven Gali. Cernile passed away on Feb. 25 at the age
of 46 after a long and hard-fought battle with lung cancer.
Sven Gali began to achieve fame in 1992 with their self-titled debut, which earned the band a Juno Award. Cernile’s success with the band lasted until 1996 when the band broke up. The band however, reunited in 2007 to play sporadic shows including two benefit concerts for Cernile in 2009, with the guitarist himself taking the stage.
Sven Gali released a tribute message on their Facebook page after the death of their friend and guitarist. “He went so very peacefully with love surrounding him and his hand held. He is now resting in peace. His family would like to thank everyone for all of your love and support.”
Michael Davis, bassist for the politically charged punk-rock pioneers MC5, passed away at the age of 68 on Feb. 17. MC5′s influence in the hard-rock world stretches from their contemporaries the Stooges to future acts like Rage Against the Machine.

Rest in peace, friend.

Bogner fronted the Austrian symphonic metal band Visions of Atlantis from 2000 to 2005, handling vocal duties on the band’s first two albums, ‘Eternal Endless Infinity’ and ‘Cast Away.’
Bogner possessed a haunting yet operatic voice, which helped give Visions of Atlantis their signature sound alongside co-vocalist Mario Plank. After Bogner’s passing, the band paid tribute to the late singer on their Facebook page. “With Nicole a great part of Visions of Atlantis died as well. We will always treasure your warm hearted soul, you will never be forgotten Nici.”
Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt, former guitarist for rock legends Iron Butterfly, passed away at the age of 63 on Jan. 2, 2012. According to his longtime girlfriend, Tracey Hooper, Reinhardt was taken off life support as requested in his living will after a struggle with complications from cirrhosis of the liver.
“He had a love for music and when he couldn’t play guitar he was depressed,” Hooper told reporters. “His love of music was everything.”
